Personal | “The Culture That Crawls”

After making it through the hardest part of my week, God really reaffirmed my decision for Honduras and the work I’ll be doing with the community.

While trying to learn how to better create videos, I stumbled upon Alex Rozier’s youtube account. Rozier works at Newsy and KOMU, a news station in Columbia, Mo.

I randomly clicked on one of the videos and about lost it. He and another reporter went to Guatemala to do a series on a segment of society that’s nearly invisible– those with severe disabilities and are immobile .

I hope to create my stories for this summer in a similar fashion as this series,  “The Culture That Crawls.” Obviously it will have a different angle, the stories will be different, but I hope the inspiration will be the same.

I think the man who shed tears in the video, Dick Rutgers, said it best about his involvement and how you can’t let the devastation paralyze you:

“Some people say you’re not supposed to get that involved. I maintain that if I can walk out that orphanage without a tear in my eye, there’s something wrong with me. It’s time I should leave. You let it break your heart. You shed a few tears and you get back to work. You do something about it.”

I want to let Honduras and the stories break my heart.

I want to shed tears from the reality of the brokenness and from the joy of hope.

I want to do something about it, not just let it paralyze.

Let’s be moved by the stories… and then mobilize more efforts to bring hope to the hopeless, rest to the restless, and joy to the joyless.

  1. I’m a media geek. So I like a little bit of everything. Text, photos, videos. I’m not a huge fan of audio slideshows, I’m not sure why. But for me, a striking photo and vivid text tend to really capture me, and a video can be a good follow up. I’m most likely to go to a video after reading something that I want to investigate further, than to start with a video. But that may just be my own method of information absorption.
