God’s Voice through Music

For some reason, I always pay close attention to song lyrics. That’s the first thing I notice and how I deem a song “good” or “bad.”

There are some songs on my iTunes account that my fiance Elizabeth can’t believe I like. Some of it’s girly. Some of it’s hardcore. Most of it’s Coldplay.

But that’s not my point.

My point is that for some reason or another, I tend to hear the voice of God in my life more through music than other places.

I find a deep connection with the Lord through words and especially beautiful juxtapositions of words.

This morning, while listening to a band named “My Epic,” I listened to a song called “Lower Still.”

Even though I’ve heard this song probably 100 times, it seems like every time, based on my own mood that a bring to my listening session, I hear something new that inspires or evokes some deep emotion and connection with God.

Have you ever felt that before?

It happens often in the same way when reading Scripture.

If I bring a tender, sensitive heart toward Scripture, I tend to find 1 Corinthians 13 a lot more heart-felt.

Yet when I’m feeling overwhelmed and burdened, Matthew 11:28-30 really speaks to me of God’s love and mercy.

And for whatever reason, I can even find comfort and joy in the midst of despair and depression while reading through Ecclesiastes.

But back to “Lower Still” by My Epic.

I’d encourage y’all to click on the Youtube link provide here and listen to the song. But don’t just zone out or write it off because of the unorthodox beat or the guy’s loud shrieks at times. Try to focus on the story within the song.

It’s an incredible story of love and sacrifice.

It’s one of the most beautiful ways I’ve heard the Gospel shared.

And I think there’s something to be said about how so often God’s voice can be heard and communicated through song.

That encourages and excites me.

You don’t just need the Romans Road or John 3:16 every time you wish to share the Gospel (though by no means do I mean to say they’d be bad to share.)

I simply wish to challenge you to think about the various ways in which God’s voice can be heard in our lives. I know this morning I’m hearing God loud and clear through My Epic.

Throughout the entire song, the theme is obviously Jesus going “lower still” throughout his entire life. He starts with being born in a place of pigs and farm animals, then the scene of him washing his disciples feet, and next he’s praying his heart out while his brothers are falling asleep on him.

The song describes, quite vividly, the beating and suffering Jesus endures. And then it ends with the following verses, which penetrate my soul maybe even more than the above lines.

“The Earth explodes
she cannot hold him!
And all therein is placed beneath Him
and death itself no longer reigns
it cannot keep the ones he gave himself to save
and as the universe shatters the darkness dissolves
he alone will be honored
we will bathe in his splendor
as all heads bow lower still
all heads bow lower still “

And what moves me the most is that ALL of Jesus’ pain and suffering, all his sacrifice and the love he poured out on the cross will ultimately be what causes every knee to bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord.

I know this morning my head is bowing lower still in reverence for God.

Let’s give Him all the glory he deserves.

  1. Great post dude! This is something I can definitely relate to. Recently, I have been making the effort to listen to the lyrics of the music I listen to (something I never did before), and God has certainly used music from Relient K to Oh Sleeper to both encourage and challenge me. I simply cannot listen to music now without really digging in to what lyrics I am listening to.
