State of the Internship | Honduras LT

Most summer internships start, well, in the summer.

Walking around at Casa Hogar Vida, near the block factory in the background, with my favorite kids on my shoulders-- David, the son of Luce.

But for my  internship in Honduras as a self-proclaimed communications specialist, it started Jan. 15 when I traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan for our MTD training conference.

MTD stands for “Missionary Team Develop” and as part of working for Great Commission Ministries, a missions organization, you have to raise your own support to fiance your trip.

(It’s not ideal, obviously, but there’s not exactly a gold mine of money in international missions. So it makes sense. And the Bible is pretty clear about supporting missionaries, too, in 1 Corinthians 9. So it’s not like their business model came from left field.)

So for my two month internship in Honduras, I’m responsible for raising $7,594. No easy task, by any means, and that’s why I say my summer internship started about two months ago.

Since the conference in Michigan, I’ve since been writing letters, making phone calls, and trying to glean any support from anywhere possible. Every penny counts, literally.

Maybe you’ve got one of the letters– you probably have. And if you haven’t, you might be getting one soon.

The letter isn’t a demand for money, but a challenge for you to go to God about my internship– ask GOD what He wants you to do with it. For some people, it might be giving financially. For others, it might be praying faithfully about the trip. For many, I hope, it’ll be both.

I hope that you would receive the letter with joy, read it and be encouraged at what God will do throughout this summer, and pray about how you could be part of this trip, too.

Because, truth is, the trip isn’t all about me.

And I want this missionary experience to be unlike many before.

I want to utilize social media, like Facebook, Twitter and Stumbleupon, in addition to websites and The Luke 9:23 Project to help you feel as though you’re with me in Honduras in some capacity. In essence, I’d like you to vicariously live through me through the way I convey what’s going on this summer.

Not everyone  has the ability, or even desire, to venture into the Third World. But I’ve heard the call. And I want to answer it with obedience. Would you join me on this journey?

MTD Progress Report and How YOU can Help

As of today, March 4, I’ve raised roughly 22% of my goal. That is a HUGE accomplishment and blessing from the Lord… so rejoice with me in that!

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: REJOICE.” Philippians 4:4

If you’re reading this and haven’t received a letter yet, and would like one, let me know in the comments section or send me an e-mail to jtsotojr[AT]gmail.com.

Also, there are a few others ways to get involved, too. Kyle Ultican and I are hosting a “March Madness for Missions” Bracket Challenge. You can see more details on our Facebook Event. Check it out– invite your friends, too.

We’ll probably end up having a Missions Dinner at our house later in the semester too. Probably a big barbecue, so that will be another way to get involved. But I’d love your support, both in prayer and financially.

Let’s do this together. We can’t do it alone.

Joey, this is super encouraging and cool to hear about! I miss you now, and I can already feel myself missing you this summer, but I know it is going to be incredible! So happy for your decision and where God is leading you. His grace is so big, and it’s amazing to see Him working in your heart. Love –AB
